Still Waiting for a Sign

One early morning a man stood beneath the wide sky and called out: “Heavenly Spirit, speak to me. Let me know You are real. Let me know You are here.”
Just then, a falcon landed nearby and stared at the man below.
But the man didn’t hear a voice.
So he called out again, louder this time:
“Creator, please, if You are there, let me hear You.”

The sun was rising behind the mountains and lit up like a Monet masterpiece. The Lake reflected the broad brush strokes of orange, blue and pink.
But still, the man did not understand.
So he raised his voice to the mountains: “Maker of all things, if You will not speak to me, then let me feel Your touch. Just once.”

At that exact moment, a branch cracked high above him, broke loose, and dropped hard onto the back of his shoulder.
The man stumbled forward, grabbed his arm, and looked up angrily at the imposing Juniper Tree.
“Curses!" he said, "Why? Why must I suffer? Why won’t You ever give me a sign?”
And somewhere in the wind, in the wings, in the sunrise, and in the falling branch, the Great Creative Spirit sighed and whispered:
“I've been speaking all along. These poor hairless apes keep waiting for thunder. But even I don't always get it right the first time."
