Is it Beautiful?

Living in Olympic Valley, CA comes with consequences. You may not know it at first, but once you spend some time here, you begin realizing you're in a vortex of unusual weather patterns. And the Olympic Valley Post Office is at the epicenter of all the overhead excitement.

What can we make of this cement box sitting outside our window?

To look at it alone is not much for the eye. It's drab off-white paint and simple structure adds no levity to the senses. It was not designed by Lloyd Wright, or a 4-yr-old, for that matter.

But the stuff happening around this uninspired block is an entirely different story.

The following photos are my attempt to capture some of Olympic Valley's magic and share it with you through a quick visual story.

Looking out our window is a communion of sorts. The sky and stars, wind and weather perform their own magic, a chiaroscuro for the soul.

Is it Beautiful?

If it makes you pause and feel awe at what Nature is capable of, then you've experienced beauty.

Is it Elegant?

Elegance is beautiful, because everything that matters and draws favorable attention and makes your skin tingle can be described in a few simple words by a child.

Is it Symmetrical?

Symmetry is beautiful, because it reveals itself in cycles, in seasons, rather than just independent moments.

Does it Promote Connection?

Connection is beautiful, because connection is where the inexplicable magic happens. Does it make you feel something? Does it resonate? Does it engage your mind, your imagination? These are the precious resources the beauty of connection produces.

It's beautiful, if it's elegant, symmetrical, and it promotes connection. But it's also beautiful if it captivates you.

Whether it's a concrete block in the middle of a parking lot, a poem, an expression, a sound, a blade of grass, or the milky way - it's beautiful if it resonates. If it makes you pause and reflect. If it makes you say, "wow!"

Our Olympic Valley Post Office, and the elements around it, helps remind us of the essence of the matter.
