Where landscapes remind us who we are

Beauty announces itself without words.

There’s an abundance of it here in Lake Tahoe, the place Nicola and I are fortunate to call home. And there’s an equally intense, untamed beauty along the jagged edge of Big Sur, a place we return to as often as life allows. Two landscapes, roughly five hours apart by car, yet intimately connected by what they ask of us: attention and presence.

In both places, something familiar happens. We find ourselves breathing more deeply and exhaling longer. We let go of worries we carried knowingly and unknowingly.

These moments arrive unannounced when the scene before us catches us off guard. When the elements align just enough to interrupt our internal monologue.

During that interruption a reset takes place.

Your nervous system recalibrates and for a fleeting, sacred moment, only you and what you’re witnessing exists. Nothing else matters.

"Yes, Big Sur can be a dream come true - or a complete washout," said Henry Miller in his book Big Sur and the Oranges of Hieronymus Bosch. "The one difference between Big Sur and other 'ideal' spots is that here you get it quick and get it hard."

You’re standing in the presence of something sublime. Something only the natural world can offer. A bridge between the unseen world of emotion and the tangible world of human experience.

If we really take time to notice, Beauty is everywhere.

"There is a quiet light that shines in every heart. It draws no attention to itself,

though it is always secretly there. It is what illuminates our minds to see beauty,

our desire to seek possibility, and our hearts to love life.

Without this subtle quickening our days would be empty and wearisome,

and no horizon would ever awaken our longing."

Beauty is more than something we see, it becomes something we feel as well. Something that reminds us of who we are, and in some cases, who we were.

As Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote, “Nature always wears the colors of the spirit.” And in moments like these, we recognize the splash of these colors immediately.

Photography, for me, is an act of listening to the call of the mountains, trees and ocean, to witnessing colors and the collective beauty of sight and feeling.

Humbled by the beauty of it all.
Humbled by the beauty of it all.

Each image is less about a place and more about the spirit of the moment. The world pauses just long enough to remind me that natural beauty isn't rare, it's everywhere, inspiring humility and reverence.

And it’s patient.

To your subtle quickening...
