A Blowout, a Stranger, and an Unexpected Gift

Sometimes the most memorable encounters happen when life takes an unexpected turn.

I've long believed that some of life's greatest gifts arrive disguised as inconveniences.

A blowout in the middle of the desert, in your rental car, for example.

There you are, traveling along what seems to be an endless desert road, enjoying the scenery, lost in your thoughts, listening to Jack Karaoke’s Big Sur and stories about his famous book, On The Road, when suddenly life decides you have somewhere else to be.

And it's not exactly on the road, but instead, as it was for me, on the side of the road.

You unexpectantly find yourself in a pickle on your road trip home.

In my life I’ve encountered a few bumps and curve balls along the way, and for the most part something good has always come from them.

You never know what, or whom, you might discover.

And that's how I came to cross paths with Herbie and his faithful traveling companion, Lucy.

Herbie isn't someone you're likely to forget.

With his beard, tattoos, and his remarkable collection of belongings, and his homemade traveling cart, he looks like someone who might have wandered out of a Steinbeck novel or a Mad Max movie, and into the twenty-first century.

Herbie had the decency to ask me if I needed any help with my car and if I wanted any water. I didn't expect that. And from his kindness a conversation started.

And then there's Lucy, his four-legged companion, who seems perfectly content to accompany him wherever the road might lead.

What struck me wasn't simply the unusual sight of a man and his dog making their way through the desert on foot, or even his kind gesture, (although that was a pretty cool moment) ...

It was his story that followed.

Herbie and Lucy are on a cross country journey on foot.

In his words, he's "walking the states." Herbie spoke of some of the rough patches he's gone through and how his life has since improved for the better. He didn't have a negative thing to say about anyone or anything. Instead, he spoke with gratitude about his journey and the kind people he's met along the way.

We're surrounded by interesting people, maybe not as eccentric as Herbie, but each carries a collection of experiences, disappointments, dreams, and hard-earned wisdom. And we often pass one another without ever learning a thing about the lives behind the faces because we're generally too busy going somewhere else.

I drove right by Herbie at 60mph about 5 miles and a couple hours earlier before my blowout. Never did I expect to meet him on the side of the road.

But stuff happens.

Suddenly, you're no longer racing toward your destination. You're standing still, looking around, and noticing things you might otherwise have missed. And thinking about your current dillema with unusual focus.

Sometimes we need an unexpected turn, an inconvenience, or a “blowout” to stand still, look around and re-assess... and meet some of the people passing by.

I wonder how many remarkable people I've passed along life's highways simply because I was in too much of a hurry to get somewhere else.

How many stories have gone unheard?

How many unexpected connections have I missed?

There's a wonderful kind of freedom in being curious about strangers. In setting aside assumptions long enough to ask a question, listen to an answer, and discover the humanity in someone whose life looks very different from our own.

I set out that day expecting a normal drive. But somewhere in the High Desert of Southeast Oregon, I stumbled upon a story.

And maybe that's the real gift of unexpected detours. They remind us that connection isn't always waiting at the end of the road. Sometimes it's walking along side it, accompanied by a dog named Lucy.

The tire was an inconvenience. Meeting Herbie and Lucy was a gift.

And given the choice, I'd gladly remember the latter.
